Good Morning Neighbor,
Well, we've got a hurricane headed toward the Panhandle, but thankfully it looks like we're going to avoid the worst of it here. We could still see 1 to 3 feet of storm surge along the coast, but otherwise, we've already been getting buckets of rain lately. Hopefully everyone in the storm's path stays safe.
And how about that sweep by the Rays?! Just fantastic! I'm not going to pretend I know what the next couple of weeks have in store for us, whether it's the weather or baseball. Hopefully this storm moves along, the rain gives us a break, and we can enjoy some more October baseball.
Have a great weekend, neighbors!
-Mike

Pasco Rancher Leaves Behind Lasting Legacy
Personally, I've always loved Starkey Wilderness Park. It's one of my favorite places in Pasco County, and I've always appreciated the beautiful land the Starkey family helped preserve. That makes it especially sad to hear that Jay B. Starkey Jr. passed away on September 9 at the age of 90. His family's efforts helped protect thousands of acres that generations of residents will continue to enjoy.
Beyond ranching, Starkey served on the Pasco County School Board, helped develop the Longleaf community and had a passion for music. A public visitation will be held Friday, October 9, from 4p-7p at Heartwood Preserve in Trinity, with funeral services Saturday.

Big Changes Proposed for US 41 and SR 54
Anyone who regularly drives through US 41 and SR 54 in Land O' Lakes knows how frustrating that intersection can be. FDOT is proposing a $3.5 million project to improve traffic flow and safety, including adding a third left-turn lane on three sides of the intersection and closing some median openings. The improvements would extend along US 41 from Leonard Road to Carson Drive and SR 54 from US 41 to Raden Drive, with construction expected to begin in fall 2027.
Here's where it gets interesting. FDOT has also been studying a much larger redesign involving a diverging diamond interchange, although that could still be several years away. In the meantime, some residents worry the proposed median closures could simply push congestion onto nearby roads. FDOT acknowledges the smaller project won't solve everything but believes it will provide some relief while longer-term options are considered.

Hurricane Isaias Strengthens, Tampa Bay Spared
We are dodging this one, thankfully! Hurricane Isaias has strengthened into a Category 2 storm with 100 mph winds and is expected to make landfall along the northern Gulf Coast late Friday or early Saturday. A direct hit to Tampa Bay isn't expected, but we'll still feel some effects.
Look for more showers and thunderstorms Friday into Saturday, along with rough seas, dangerous rip currents and possible coastal flooding. The good news? Drier air and lower rain chances should return early next week.

Pasco School Tax Returns to Ballot
Pasco County voters will have a decision to make on November 3. The school district is asking voters to renew a property tax first approved in 2022 that generates about $60 million annually, primarily to supplement teacher and staff salaries. This is a renewal, not an additional tax, and costs roughly $200 a year for a home assessed at $200,000.
The district says the funding has helped recruit and retain employees and warns that salaries could drop approximately 12% if the measure fails. The renewal would last up to four years before returning to voters again.
ZooTampa Moves Closer to $150M Expansion
Some big changes could be ahead for ZooTampa! Hillsborough County Commissioners voted 4-3 to advance a 15-year partnership that would provide $75 million in county funding, matched by the zoo. Plans include an Australia-themed family ride, upgraded animal habitats and a major South America expansion.
Not everyone agrees on the funding, though. Some commissioners worry the commitment leaves less money for other local attractions, including the Florida Aquarium and Glazer Children's Museum. The deal isn't final yet, with another county vote expected October 21.

Moffitt's New Research Center Nears Opening
Moffitt's massive Speros campus in Land O' Lakes continues to grow, and its next big addition is focused on cancer research. The new 250,000-square-foot Discovery and Innovation Center will bring together approximately 250 scientists across 20 laboratories, working on everything from drug discovery to new cancer treatments.
The research center's ribbon-cutting is scheduled for October 22. Moffitt expects to have 2,400 employees working across the Speros campus by the end of 2026, with more than 11,000 jobs projected by 2033.
Raising Cane's Investing $1.75 Million in Tampa
Raising Cane's isn't exactly new to our area. Many of us have already visited the Lutz location near Tampa Premium Outlets, but the chicken chain is continuing its expansion with a $1.75 million investment in its first restaurant within Tampa city limits.
The company plans to demolish the Sunnyside dispensary at 1902 N. Dale Mabry Highway and replace it with a new restaurant featuring a drive-thru, mobile-order pickup and outdoor dining. This would be Raising Cane's fifth Tampa Bay location, although an opening date hasn't been announced.
