Good Morning Neighbor,

It's looking like a classic early June weekend around North Tampa. Temperatures will be firmly in summer mode, and unlike some recent weekends, rain chances look pretty limited with only a few isolated showers possible. If you've been waiting for a good weekend to get outside, browse a local market, or spend some time with family and friends, this may be the one.

On the sports front, congratulations to Saint Leo University for bringing home the first softball national championship in school history. That's a pretty remarkable accomplishment for a university right here in our community. And for soccer fans, the World Cup is right around the corner with North America hosting, so don't be surprised when watch parties start popping up across the area.

We've got a handful of local happenings, community updates, and a few interesting stories to catch up on this week. Thanks for spending a few minutes with us, and have a great weekend.

-Mike

Highlights

Three Counties Unite on Transportation Planning

This has major potential for more efficient travel around the Tampa Bay region as Pasco, Hillsborough, and Pinellas counties move forward with a new regional transportation planning organization. By working together instead of separately, local leaders hope to strengthen their ability to plan major road, transit, and infrastructure projects while competing for additional transportation funding.

The new 25-member board would include representatives from all three counties, along with Port Tampa Bay and Tampa International Airport. Supporters say a unified approach could help the region tackle transportation challenges that don't stop at county lines and give Tampa Bay a stronger voice when pursuing state and federal funding.

Saint Leo Wins First National Championship

A huge congratulations is in order for Saint Leo University. The Lions softball team just captured the first national championship in program history, defeating McKendree 5-2 to win the NCAA Division II Softball National Championship.

The title caps off a remarkable season for the Lions, who finished 54-3-1 while also setting program records for wins and longest winning streak. Not bad for the small university right here in our backyard. 🦁🥎

Firefighters Rescue Trapped Wesley Chapel Owl

Well, I saw this story about 15 different times on various outlets, so I owe it to you to show it off.

Pasco County Fire Rescue crews recently came to the aid of an owl that had become stuck at the base of a tree in the Lexington Oaks community. After firefighters safely freed the bird, it quickly flew away unharmed, earning plenty of praise from onlookers. It's a simple story, but it's always nice to see our local first responders helping both residents and wildlife when they're needed.

Pasco Preserves Nearly 1,900 Acres

As Pasco continues to grow, county leaders just completed the largest land preservation project in county history. Nearly 1,900 acres of the 4G Ranch property in eastern Pasco have been permanently protected through a conservation easement aimed at preserving wildlife habitat, water resources, and open space.

County officials say the land creates an important connection between several existing conservation areas and supports both wildlife and Pasco's award-winning water reuse program. The ranch will remain privately owned and continue operating as a working cattle ranch, while the protected land stays undeveloped for future generations.

Pasco Considers Data Center Pause

Pasco County leaders are considering a temporary 12-month pause on new data center projects while they study potential impacts on water supplies, power infrastructure, and future growth. The proposal comes after significant public feedback, with residents raising concerns about utility demands and questioning how many local jobs the facilities would actually create.

The measure will be reviewed by the Planning Commission on June 11 and could move to the County Commission for a public hearing on June 16. If approved, the moratorium would temporarily halt new applications while county staff evaluate existing regulations and infrastructure needs.

New Look at USF's Future Stadium

USF released updated images of its on-campus football stadium, giving fans a fresh look at the seating areas, rooftop deck, suites, and other premium spaces planned for the $348.5 million project.

Construction remains on track for the 2027 football season, when the Bulls will finally have a permanent home stadium on campus for the first time in program history.
