Good Morning From Lutz,

I’m not sure if you’ve noticed the night sky turning into sunrise by about 6:15 every morning, but that’s usually the giveaway that summer is here. The 10-day forecast isn’t exactly hiding it either, with temperatures hanging around the low-to-mid 90s most days and the usual afternoon storm chances starting to settle back into the routine.

Between Memorial Day weekend coming up and everybody trying to squeeze a little more out of these longer evenings, it definitely feels like the season is shifting.

Here’s a bit of what’s happening.

-Mike

9/11 Steel Beam Stops In Land O’ Lakes

A powerful piece of 9/11 history made its way through Land O’ Lakes this week as part of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation “Steel Across America” tour ahead of the 25th anniversary of the attacks this September. The beam, weighing 16,000 pounds, was recovered from the South Tower of the World Trade Center and is traveling to more than 35 cities across the country.

The stop happened at the Let Us Do Good Village in Land O’ Lakes, a community of mortgage-free homes built for Gold Star families and families of fallen first responders. Organizers said the tribute is meant to remind people that the sacrifices connected to 9/11 are still continuing today, especially as firefighters continue battling 9/11-related illnesses and cancers.

After leaving Land O’ Lakes, the beam will continue traveling to places like Mount Rushmore, several Major League Baseball stadiums, and eventually back to Ground Zero for the 25th anniversary of 9/11. The next Florida stop on the tour is Sarasota, at the same school where George W. Bush was visiting students on the morning of the attacks.

Flag Drop-Off Box Comes To Dade City

A new American flag drop-off box is now outside Dade City Hall, giving residents a proper way to retire worn or damaged flags. The effort is being led by the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution as part of ongoing community projects ahead of America’s 250th anniversary.

Gorgeous!

The group collects the flags throughout the year and holds a public retirement ceremony annually. Last year alone, members retired more than 1,000 flags, and they expect even more now that the public drop-off box is available.

Friday Night Car Show Rolls In

Tampa Bay Beacons is pointing out a new monthly car show in Lutz called “Cars at the Corner,” and it sounds like one of those easy local Friday night hangouts that could grow into a pretty cool tradition.

The event happens the first Friday of every month from 6–9 p.m. outside Capriotti’s Sandwich Shop near Collier Parkway and SR 54. Expect classic cars, muscle cars, trucks, music, and plenty of people hanging around swapping stories while nearby restaurants and businesses stay busy.

The organizer says the goal was simply to bring back a Friday night car scene to the area, and the first meetup already drew dozens of vehicles. The article also mentions John Cena, who lives part-time nearby and has reportedly been spotted driving cars from his collection around SR 54.

New Sports Heart Screening Requirement Ahead

A lot of Tampa Bay families got a head start this weekend as more than 700 student athletes attended free heart screenings and sports physicals at the AdventHealth Training Center in Tampa. The event comes ahead of a new Florida law taking effect July 1 that will require high school athletes to get an EKG before playing school sports for the first time.

Doctors say the added screening can help detect hidden heart conditions that may not show up during a routine sports physical, giving families another layer of protection before students take the field, court, or mat. The law was created following the death of a Florida high school football player who had an undiagnosed heart condition.

The article also notes that families who missed this weekend’s clinic can still find additional free screening opportunities through AdventHealth as the new requirement gets closer.

Two Busy Pasco Intersections Getting Signals

If you drive anywhere near County Line Road or Meadow Pointe Boulevard during rush hour, this is probably welcome news. Pasco County is moving forward with traffic signal projects at two long-discussed intersections in Lutz and Wesley Chapel, both aimed at improving traffic flow and safety in some heavily used commuter areas.

Construction officially started in April on the new signal at Cypress Creek Rd. and County Line Rd., with the project expected to be operational sometime this summer. Meanwhile, Pasco County also approved design funding for a future signal at Meadow Pointe Blvd. and Country Point Blvd., the only entrance and exit for the Country Walk community, where residents have dealt with difficult backups for years. Construction there is currently listed in the county’s 2027 work plan.

New STEM Charter School Coming To Wesley Chapel

Neighborhood News is pointing out a major new school project underway in Wesley Chapel. Discovery Academy of Science is building a new tuition-free STEM-focused charter school on S.R. 56 near Two Ridges Road, with construction already underway ahead of a planned 2027 opening.

The school will open with grades K-6 before expanding to K-8 and plans to focus heavily on science, technology, engineering, math, reading, robotics, coding, and hands-on learning opportunities. School leaders say the campus is expected to eventually serve around 860 students as Wesley Chapel continues to grow and families look for more education options in the area.

Pasco County Animal Services Presents: Bella

Bella (A023267) is a 2yo female mixed breed weighing 29 pounds. Bella is a perfectly-sized medium dog with a playful personality. Bella participates in play group at the shelter, and she is very social with other dogs. Bella has met several families in the past few weeks, but has not met theee one… yet. Bella would do great in a home where she can get some good exercise and engagement, and she is able to chill when needed. Bella is having a difficult time in her kennel, so we’d love to see her get adopted this week!
