The community has overwhelmed Cobalt Apartments with donations. They’ve actually had to tell people to stop donating physical goods. They don’t have anywhere to put it. Others have stepped up with additional space and they still have to put a stop to it. Impressive job, everyone. You can still donate financially to the residents here:

Rays Reach First True Stadium Deal

After months of preliminary agreements and negotiations, the Rays, Tampa and Hillsborough County have reached their first actual stadium deal. The newly released documents provide the framework for a $2.3 billion ballpark at Hillsborough College’s Dale Mabry campus, a rebuilt college campus and a privately financed neighborhood surrounding it. The Rays hope to begin playing there in 2029.

One major hurdle was Tampa’s original $180 million contribution, which faced resistance over its use of Community Investment Tax money. The revised plan removes city CIT funding and calls for Tampa to provide $80 million over four years as reimbursement for completed infrastructure work. The deal still needs approval from Tampa City Council on Aug. 27 and the Hillsborough County Commission on Aug. 28, and some details could change before those votes.

Safer Pasco School Zones Take Shape

Pasco is taking an early step toward making school zones safer, but no cameras are being installed yet. Commissioners approved moving forward with the planning process for two systems that could warn drivers about danger and eventually ticket those speeding through school zones.

The county still needs an ordinance, public meetings, agreements with local agencies and a competitive bidding process. With installation following all of that, the systems could be more than two years away.

Help Put Shoes on Pasco Kids

Here’s an easy way to help local students while you’re already out running errands. Pasco’s five Tax Collector offices are collecting new shoes and socks for the Two Good Soles drive through Oct. 15. Nearby drop-off locations include the Land O’ Lakes office on US 41 and the Wesley Chapel office at 4160 Pet Lane in Lutz.

Since 2016, the program has provided 24,000 pairs of shoes and 58,000 pairs of socks to Pasco students. There’s also a new Two Good Soles 5K beginning at 8a Sept. 12 at Sunwest Park in Hudson.

Flood Relief Finally Moving Forward

This is welcome news for neighbors around Zephyrhills who have dealt with flooding for years. Pasco County approved $1.87 million to connect Geiger Pond with Zephyr Creek and help water move through the area more efficiently. Some homes nearby were surrounded by standing water for months after Hurricane Milton.

Work should begin soon and take about a year. This is only the first of three planned phases, but it’s a meaningful start for an area that has relied on emergency pumps during major storms.

A Big Vision for Moffitt’s Speros

There could eventually be a lot more coming to Moffitt’s 775-acre Speros campus in Pasco County. Moffitt is working with USF, Pasco-Hernando State College and others on plans for a hub where new radioactive cancer treatments could be researched, produced and used. The group believes it could create 4,000 high-paying jobs over the next decade.

That’s the vision, but we’re not there yet. No companies have committed to opening at Speros, and the funding needed to build everything has not been announced. It’s still worth watching because, if the pieces come together, this could become a major cancer research and employment center close to home.

TPA’s 54-Year-Old Tower Getting Replaced

Tampa International Airport is planning a new $155 million air traffic control tower to replace the one that has been operating since 1972. The FAA is providing $18 million for modern radar systems and upgraded controller displays, which could help reduce flight delays and cancellations.

The exact location and construction start date haven’t been decided yet. Planners are using drones to find a spot with a clear view of the entire airfield, and construction is expected to take several years while work on the new Airside D also continues.

Saint Leo Expands Career-Focused Programs

Saint Leo University is adding more than 10 academic programs in growing fields including nursing, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, business analytics, finance, social work and forensic science. The university also plans to provide every student with AI and digital-skills training through a partnership with IBM.

The expansion is backed by $4.8 million in recent state funding and private donations. Saint Leo is also adding more internships, clinical experiences and employer partnerships to better connect classroom learning with future careers. Nearly 850 new students will begin the fall semester at its residential campus.
