NTB tries to stay out of politics, but we did have some local elections this week. I encourage you to take a few minutes and give the results a look. It’s always worth knowing what’s happening in the communities around us.

And how about that light show Wednesday night? The sky was putting on quite a show. Unfortunately, that storm also brought a scary situation in Wesley Chapel, where lightning reportedly sparked a roof fire at an apartment complex. Best wishes to the families affected.

The weather has certainly been crazy this year, but then again, crazy weather is pretty normal for Florida. The good news is there’s nothing we need to worry about in the tropics right now.

Rays Stadium Deal Nears Deadline

The Rays stadium saga is getting down to the wire. It feels like we’ve provided 50 updates on this process. The team says it needs a final agreement by the end of August to keep a September groundbreaking on track, with the new stadium planned to open in 2029.

The Rays have committed $1.2 billion to the project, while major details of the public funding are still being worked out between Tampa and Hillsborough County. Mayor Jane Castor says negotiations are happening daily, but acknowledged they could stretch into September.

Free Plant, Seed & Book Swap in Land O’ Lakes 🌱

Here’s a fun one for the plant lovers. Rosebud Continuum in Land O’ Lakes is hosting a free Seed + Plant + Book Swap this Saturday from 10a-1p on its 14-acre property.

Bring seeds, plants or books to trade, but you don’t actually have to bring anything. Organizers say they’ll have plenty to share, so you’re welcome to come by and take something home. It’s happening at 22843 Hale Road in Land O’ Lakes.

Free Pet Adoptions in Pasco 🐶🐱

Thinking about adding a furry member to the family? Pasco County Animal Services is waiving adoption fees for all available dogs and cats during the annual Clear the Shelters event Aug. 26-30.

Even better, the free adoptions include spaying or neutering, vaccinations and microchipping. Pasco residents will still need to purchase a county pet license.

New Sidewalk Coming Near Pine View

This should be a welcome change for families around Pine View Elementary and Middle schools. Pasco County is getting ready to build a new sidewalk along Parkway Boulevard in Land O’ Lakes, an area identified as the county’s most dangerous school location for pedestrians.

The sidewalk will extend from the existing sidewalk near Pine View Elementary to Collier Parkway and will include a new crosswalk. The project is funded through a state appropriation and is expected to take about 200 days to complete.

Advanced Stroke Treatment Comes to Wesley Chapel

AdventHealth Wesley Chapel has added a new neurointerventional suite that can treat some of the most serious strokes right here in Wesley Chapel, potentially eliminating the need to transfer patients elsewhere for care.

The new technology allows doctors to perform a mechanical thrombectomy, a minimally invasive procedure that removes a blood clot from the brain and restores blood flow. With stroke treatment, every minute matters, so being able to perform the procedure locally can mean faster treatment and potentially better recovery.

The new suite can also be used to treat brain aneurysms and perform other neurovascular procedures. It's another step toward AdventHealth Wesley Chapel becoming a Comprehensive Stroke Center, while expanding the level of emergency care available close to home.

Mixology Nights Are Coming to the Lagoons 🍹

MetroLagoons is bringing back its Behind the Bottle series, with monthly hands-on cocktail classes coming to both Mirada Lagoon in San Antonio and Epperson Lagoon in Wesley Chapel.

Each $50 class features a different spirit, with mixologists walking guests through making cocktails themselves. The lineup starts with Patrón Tequila in September, followed by Bacardí, Grey Goose, Angel’s Envy and more through February.

Mirada's first night is Sept. 4, followed by Epperson on Sept. 11. Doors open at 6:30p, mixing starts at 7p, and you have to be 21+. Reservations are required and space is limited.
