No, not that race. We’re talking about the one in New Mexico, where humans sprinted uphill dragging stubborn donkeys behind them in what’s lovingly called burro racing. Inspired by old gold miners and fueled by sheer determination, it’s the kind of sport that makes you wonder… who’s really in charge here?

Wesley Chapel Woman Saves Her Neighborhood
There’s someone out there reading this who would’ve called 911 and done exactly what they should, but Gigi Cangeme did that and more. Late at night on May 2, after a long shift, Gigi was driving home through her Wesley Chapel neighborhood when she spotted flames rising behind a row of houses. Instead of brushing it off, she pulled over, jumped out of her car, and started knocking on doors one by one.

Her neighbors were asleep. The fire was dangerously close. Fire officials later confirmed the homes were just minutes from being engulfed. One neighbor, Sherif Botros, recalled, “We were terrified. We didn’t know if our home would catch fire.” He credited both Gigi’s bravery and the fast-moving fire crews with stopping a full-blown disaster.

Pasco County Fire and Rescue has responded to nearly 100 outdoor fires in the past 30 days. With dry conditions continuing, a burn ban is in effect and residents are urged to use caution.

As for Gigi, she humbly downplayed her actions. “I didn’t think about being a hero; I just wanted to alert everyone. We’re a community, and that’s what you do.” Honestly, she said it best.

Wesley Chapel Welcomes New ER
AdventHealth just opened its brand-new Meadow Pointe ER on Chapel Commerce Drive, adding 24/7 emergency care right in the heart of Wesley Chapel. The 13,000-square-foot facility includes 12 treatment rooms, advanced imaging, and even a pediatric-friendly space.

Built in just nine months, this $26 million project has already created over two dozen jobs and expands the region’s emergency response capabilities with direct access to AdventHealth helicopters and ambulances.

Jeremiah’s Italian Ice Coming to Odessa
Craving Italian ice, soft-serve, or that dreamy swirl called Gelati? Odessa’s getting its own Jeremiah’s Italian Ice, now under construction at 16230 State Road 54. Expect 40+ rotating flavors, creamy layers, and fun combinations. No word on the grand opening yet, but it’s coming soon and my kids can’t wait!

Kay’s Kitchen Now Open Near Lutz
Chicago-style fried chicken just landed near Lutz at Kay’s Kitchen’s new Bearss Ave location. Known for their signature mild sauce, crispy fish, and shrimp, this is their third restaurant and already drawing hungry crowds.

Get ready for a sugar rush, Andy’s Frozen Custard is officially scooping in Lutz! Swing by on Friday, May 9 between 11 AM and 1 PM for $2 one-topping sundaes, a ribbon cutting, and a sweet way to welcome the newest dessert spot in town.

Downtown Saturday Market Debuts in Wesley Chapel
Avalon Park Wesley Chapel launched its new Downtown Saturday Market on May 3. The market, featuring local vendors, farm-fresh produce, and handmade goods, will return on May 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It's a great opportunity for residents to support small businesses and enjoy the community atmosphere.

Wheelchair Rugby Nationals Held in Wesley Chapel
Wesley Chapel hosted the U.S. Wheelchair Rugby National Championships again last weekend, drawing 200+ athletes and 18 top teams from across the country. Organized by the Wounded Warriors Abilities Ranch and Pasco Tourism, the event included food trucks, music, and a whole lot of heart at Wiregrass Ranch Sports Campus.

Just another Reminder, Dry Weather = High Fire Risk
Pasco County Fire Rescue has responded to nearly 100 outdoor fires in the past month. The current burn ban is still active. Stay alert, report any suspicious smoke, and conserve water as much as possible.
🚫 Burning yard waste or using fire pits outdoors is prohibited until further notice.

Recycle Your Cans – Seriously
Aluminum prices could rise soon. Hillsborough County is reminding everyone that tossing soda and beer cans in the recycling bin can help keep local supplies stable. So yep, your fizzy drink cans might just make a difference.

REAL ID Deadline Is May 7
Starting May 7, you’ll need a REAL ID (look for the gold star on your license) to board domestic flights or enter federal facilities. Representative Anna Paulina Luna is urging DHS to delay enforcement, but for now, it’s a go. If your license isn’t compliant, use a valid passport or military ID instead.

Busch Gardens Ranks Among Top 20 Amusement Parks in the Nation
In news that surprises absolutely no one who’s ever screamed their lungs out on Iron Gwazi or grabbed a safari selfie mid churro, Busch Gardens just ranked among the top amusement parks in the U.S., according to U.S. News & World Report.
