Neighbors Rally to Save Historic Live Oak in Dade City

In Dade City, residents are stepping up to protect a massive live oak tree that has stood near Meridian Avenue and 17th Street for generations. The city planned to remove it as part of a sidewalk project, but neighbors pushed back, gathering signatures and speaking at meetings to ask for alternatives.

They’re hoping the city will find a way to reroute the project and preserve the tree, which some estimate is more than 100 years old.

Sometimes the oldest parts of town still have a lot of life and heart left in them.

That wasn’t as easy as our previous trivia question.

If you or someone you know is job hunting, Pasco County’s hosting a Career Fair on Monday, August 5 in Dade City. It'll be at the Cooperative Extension Office, and they’re hiring for all kinds of county roles.

They haven’t listed every position yet, but it sounds like a solid chance to connect directly with the folks doing the hiring. Could be a great fit if you’re looking for something steady or just ready for a change.

Might be worth polishing up that resume. Here are some listings.

Florida’s Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday Is On Now

It depends on who you ask, because if you’ve been home with the kids all summer, it probably didn’t go as fast as it did for the kids. But, it’s time for school again, and starting today, you can take advantage of a full month of tax-free shopping just in time to get back to school. As part of a $2 billion tax relief package signed earlier this year, school-related items are exempt from sales tax through August 31.

New Site Connects You to Local Eggs, Produce, and More

There’s a new site called FarmPixie, and it might be exactly what you didn’t know you needed. Built by a local resident, it connects you directly with nearby farmers and backyard growers selling everything from eggs and produce to honey, compost, and even livestock.

No fees, no middleman, just locals supporting locals. You can even trade or barter. It was all created by Kim Kenney, a Carrollwood neighbor who wanted to make it easier to find fresh, local food. She owns a property in Dade City.

More Relief in the State of Florida

You know our hurricane prep scrambles? Those are going to be a little easier to handle going forward.

As of today, hurricane supplies are tax-free year-round. That includes things like gas cans, batteries, tarps, insect repellent, carbon monoxide detectors, and even generators up to 10,000 watts.

If you’ve been meaning to get ahead of the storm season (for once), now you can stock up without paying sales tax.
